<p align="JUSTIFY"><span style="font-family: times new roman, times, serif; color: #000000;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span lang="en-US">This paper submitted the method of remote sensed estimate the forest artificial regeneration (tree planting). The objective was to designate the moment of transition from clear cuts to forested lands. The studies took place in Suzemskoe forestry in Bryansk region. We used a forest taxation data and annual cloud-free Landsat composite images (2002 &#8211; 2015 years). Vegetation indexes (NDVI and SWVI) were calculated by the time series of cloud-free composite images. The database of the ages of transition of clear cuts to artificial regeneration was compiled based on taxation data from forest inventory of the forestries (2003 y.). Cumulative values of vegetation indexes for the whole study period were calculated from the time series for the whole period. Examining the NDVI-SWVI indexes of the artificial regeneration sites allowed finding the linear relationship, the incline of the linear regression and thresholds of clear cuts transitioning to forested lands. The method was tested for Steklyanskoe, Krasnoslobodskoe and Kokorevskoe forestries. The correct classification of the clear cuts transitioned to the regrowth category reached 80.1%.</span></span></span></p>

<p align="JUSTIFY"><span style="font-family: times new roman, times, serif; color: #000000;">Vorobjev’s indicator tables of plant species were updated according to the modern nomenclature of plant species. The Vorobjev’s tables are used to determine the types of forest conditions (forest sites) (FS) according to the Krudener-Alekseev-Pogrebnyak system in the Russian forest inventory. Prof. Ludmila Zaugolnova developed a database according to these tables in the early 1990s. An analysis of 898 indicator species by type and subtype of the edaphic grid (with accounting of ecological-coenotic groups of species) showed a very high proportion of species of relatively rich habitats among the indicator plants (subtype C, 78%). The expected high representation of piny species in subtype A, boreal species in subtype B and nemoral species in subtype C turned out to be biased in the Vorobjev’s tables toward richer (and often wetter) habitats. An algorithm has been developed for the formal calculation of FS by the composition of plant species dominated the ground layer of forest stands. The algorithm was tested on the data of forest inventory of 1981 in the Prioksko-Terrasny Biosphere Reserve. In 77% of cases, the FS values calculated from the lists of dominant species coincided with the FS values marked in the forest inventory data, but in 62% of cases the calculated estimates did not have a single value. In general, formal processing allows revealing inconsistencies of FS values and lists of species dominated the ground layer, if such inconsistencies exist. The proposed algorithm and the developed database can be used to determine FS according to the Pogrebnyak’s system and the list of dominants in the ground layer as well as for independent verification of expert assessments of FS contained in forest inventory data.</span></p>

<p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #000000; font-family: times new roman, times, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span lang="en-US">To improve the accuracy of the assessment of forest area from aerial photographs by automated decoding, it is necessary to study of the degree of tightness and interrelation forms between decryption and evaluation indexes. The purpose of the study is to identify the most reliable (optimal) dependencies between these indicators and the subsequent development of equations in their calculation. The interrelations of the taxation diameter and decoding indicators of the forest stand such as: height and diameter of the crowns are revealed. As a result of the analysis of the dependencies between the fullness and closed canopy revealed a weak relationship.</span></span></span></p>

<p align="JUSTIFY"><span lang="en-US" style="font-family: times new roman, times, serif; color: #000000;">We carried out a quantitative analysis of the dependence of the vitality and species composition of tree undergrowth in pine forests of the southern Moscow region on a complex of biotic, abiotic, and edaphic factors. The paired sampling plots were established (consisting of sub-plots with and without undergrowth). The stand characteristics, the dominating species of the ground layer vegetation were determined, and the light intensity, the thickness and moisture of forest floor, the concentration of carbon and nitrogen in forest floor and mineral soil were measured on each of sub-plots. We used the principal component analysis, a pairwise comparison of environmental factors on sub-plots with and without undergrowth, as well as multiple multivariate correlation analysis for data processing. The results of the study showed that the main factors affecting natural regeneration are soil characteristics and light regime, while the influence of the forest ground vegetation on tree regeneration was not identified.</span></p>

<p align="JUSTIFY"><span style="font-family: times new roman, times, serif; color: #000000;"><span lang="en-GB">Professor Olga V. Smirnova, Doctor of Biological Sciences, is a prominent scientist in the field of plant demography, population biology and forest ecosystem ecology. Professor Smirnova’s edifice is based on ideas about the leading role of plant and animal populations in the organisation of the biogeocenotic cover. In this case, it is implied that a continuous turnover of generations in populations of edificators (key species) is necessary to maintain the species and structural diversity of communities and ensure their sustainability. This system of views was formed under the influence of Professor Alexey A. Uranov. The development of these ideas was consistent and gradual. First, Professor Smirnova studied the biology of different plant species life forms. Examining their individual development, with identification of ontogenetic stages, is necessary for demographic research. She then developed the theory of coenopopulations as supraorganismal systems, which can self-sustain under different conditions. Finally, she </span><span lang="en-US">developed</span><span lang="en-GB"> the doctrine of biogeocenosis as a system of interacting populations</span><span lang="en-US"> and created the concept of anthropogenic transformation of the forest cover in the Holocene.</span><span lang="en-GB"> Her contributions helped researchers to understand the mechanisms of the formation of modern zonality that are due to human activity.</span></span></p>

<p align="JUSTIFY"><span lang="en-US" style="font-family: times new roman, times, serif; color: #000000;">Currently, the focus of international attention to forest issues has shifted from monitoring compliance with the principles of sustainable forest management to monitoring the legality of forest use, to the introduction of an international “regime of legality” in the forest sector. Opposition to illegal logging is growing in the world. The Russian Federation has a long and successful experience in preserving its forests, and has repeatedly initiated international agreements and negotiation processes on forest conservation, including the issue of illegal logging. Unfortunately, for a number of reasons, in the last five years, there have been no international activities and coordination activities of the Russian Federation in these processes. The forest legislation of the Russian Federation has no clear definition of “illegal logging”. Currently, illegal logging is detected mainly outside the boundaries of forest land – during the arrest of violators during transportation and / or sale of illegally harvested wood. This system is random (periodic raids, law enforcement operations) and allows to detect only a small part of offenses related to illegal logging. The volumes of illegal logging presented by official statistics do not correspond to real figures, they are underestimated many times. In this regard, the decisions taken by the state are either erroneous or do not reflect the depth of the existing problem. The current number of forest guards and their technical equipment do not allow for the adequate protection of forests, timely detection of illegal logging and bringing violators to justice. Decisions to replace forest protection with remote monitoring tools and information systems proved to be untenable. It is necessary to encourage state forest management bodies to receive maximum forest income in order to maintain a full-fledged, technically equipped forest protection. It is also necessary create a special fund of the Russian Federation for the forests protection and regeneration using cash inflow from the payments for the use of forests (by analogy with the creation of a system of road funds in the Russian Federation).</span></p>

<p align="JUSTIFY"><span lang="en-US" style="font-family: times new roman, times, serif; color: #000000;">Forestry contribution into food security and nutrition is considered on global, regional and national levels. Methods and indicators to estimate and plan the forestry contribution into food security are presented. There are recommendations to implement liberal conditions for citizenry and organizations to procure food forest values. Multi-purpose use of forest is considered as a base of sustainable forest management.</span></p>
