Phytomass \u2013 including standing trees, undergrowth and understory, and forest floor vegetation \u2013 plays an important role in the global carbon cycle through its capacity to absorb atmospheric carbon and provide long-term carbon storage. This article provides a review of available data on phytomass and phytomass carbon stocks in spruce forests of Russia and several European countries. Using the Murmansk region as a case study, we examine the key characteristics and critical factors influencing the spatial distribution and formation of phytomass carbon pools.
